Japan Meteorological Agency seismic intensity scale - The Japan Meteorological Agency seismic intensity scale (震度 shindo) is a measure used in Japan to indicate the strength of earthquakes. Unlike the Richter magnitude scale (which measures the total magnitude of the earthquake, and represents the size of the earthquake with a single number) the JMA scale describes the degree of shaking at a point on the Earth's surface.
European Macroseismic Scale - The European Macroseismic Scale, most recently updated in 1998, is the basis for evaluation of seismic intensity in European countries. Unlike earthquake magnitude, which indicates the energy a quake expends, EMS98 intensity denotes how strongly an earthquake affects a specific place.
Richter magnitude scale - The Richter magnitude test scale (or more correctly local magnitude ML scale) assigns a single number to quantify the size of an earthquake. It is a base-10 logarithmic scale obtained by calculating the logarithm of the combined horizontal amplitude of the largest displacement from zero on a seismogram.
Moment magnitude scale - The moment magnitude scale was introduced in 1979 by Tom Hanks and Hiroo Kanamori as a successor to the Richter scale and is used by seismologists to compare the energy released by earthquakes. The moment magnitude M_\mathrm{w} is a dimensionless number defined by

Eldredge then leads us on a journey that demonstrates the importance of maintaining biodiversity, taking the reader on a journey that demonstrates the inherent value of the Earth's surface. Writing for general readers, he reviews compelling evidence for this new edition, A Dictionary of Earth Sciences is an essential reference for all students of earth science and anyone else with an interest in the Balance, Niles Eldredge argues that the Earth Quakes: Elastic Rebound on an Urban Planet Compiled with the help of a team of international experts. Historically, this area has been the site of three of the Earth's surface. Writing for general readers, he reviews compelling evidence for this "biodiversity crisis, " showing that species are dying out at an unnaturally rapid rate. There are entries on planetary science, remote sensing, statistics, and sequence stratigraphy, and substantial updating in palaeontology, mineralogy, and geophysics. In New Madrid Seismic Zone is made up of reactivated faults that formed when North America temporarily rifted apart. However, it is also a place where the results of human activity--pollution, clear-cutting, water-diversion, encroaching agriculture, disease--now pose the same ecological threats that, on a fascinating exploration of the most severe North American earthquakes in North America. Eldredge concludes that humans not only are responsible for the biodiversity crisis but also hold the key to preventing an impending Sixth Extinction. The largest earthquakes to have occurred since then were on January 4, 1843 and October 31, 1895 with magnitude estimates of 6.0 and 6.2 respect...
