Femtosecond lasers have now been around for over a decade, during which time short pulse technology has made such huge improvements that pulse durations have been reduced from around one picosecond to ten femtoseconds, while intensities have gone up by five orders of magnitude. The resulting fluxes from these devices are capable of tearing matter apart within a few laser cycles.
